Winery #94: Weingut Davaz (Fläsch, Switzerland)

Updated: Sep 29, 2022

A visit to the beautifully modern, family-owned, and operated Weingut Davaz kicked off our afternoon in Switzerland’s famous wine-producing region of Fläsch. Previously hearing about the fantastic wine quality of this region, we were excited to have an opportunity to visit the area. Weingut Davaz did not disappoint! Our guide, Luca, started the experience with an overview of his family's history, followed by an in-depth and educational tour of the production facilities.

Along the way, we had the chance to visit the estate's amazing event spaces overlooking the mountains to the rear of the estate, what a perfect place for a wedding! Interestingly enough, Luca did recently get married in the facilities, thus explaining his radiance of joy throughout the tour! Our host educated us on each facet of wine production, from the harvest to the grape reception at the winery, the estate's fermentation procedures, and the maturation and bottling steps. We had the opportunity to meet the Davaz cellar manager as she took a quick break from washing the equipment with her team in preparation for harvest.

After the tour, Luca led us back to the tasting room, where we sat in very comfortable leather chairs to taste eight wines representative of the Weingut Davaz range. Wineries in the Fläsch region are known to produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as the climate, soil, and hills are best suited for the grapes. Davaz has an array of wines from those two grapes as well as wines made from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc. Our favorite wine from the lineup was the 2021 Chardonnay that the winemaker matured ten months in old oak barrels, providing lovely texture to the wine. We found the wine to exhibit a complex bouquet of aromas and flavors, including pear, apple, butter, and cream, as well as vanilla and cedar from the oak. The Chardonnay's flavors persisted long after we tasted the wine, a testament to the quality of the wine.

500 Wineries extends an enormous THANK YOU to our host, Luca, for the wonderful experience at his family’s estate in Fläsch. We score the experience within the top 25% of the last 102 (yes... 102) visits over the last year. If you are in the area located just a short distance from Zürich by train or car, we highly recommend making the detour to visit Weingut Davaz!
