A family business since 1982, Weingut Lampert pleases the palate with its wines in a gorgeous tasting room graced with an enormous, historic wine press. Our host Thomas represents the second generation of the family cultivating grapes and producing wines out of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir, among other grape varietals. Thomas provided a brief overview of the estate and the family's history to kick off our wine experience. Due to producing only 20,000-25,000 bottles per year, he informed us that they sold out of several wines. We imagine this is an excellent problem to have for a wine producer! Luckily, a new harvest brings with it more wines. The Weingut Lampert tasting room has a beautiful bar and several tables spread out within the room. One table, produced from a large oak wine barrel, really caught our eye. So creative!
For the tasting, Thomas poured eight wines representative of the estate. Thomas's father, Markus, stopped by to introduce himself before heading back out to the vineyards in final preparation for harvest. It's always an absolute pleasure to shake hands with someone like Markus, who had a vision and created a successful business like Weingut Lampert.
Our favorite wine from the lineup was the 2020 Pinot Noir Barrique, produced from two of the best vineyard blocks and aged in 30% new oak barrels after fermentation. With the wine's red fruit aromas of cherry and strawberry and the notes from the oak ageing, such as vanilla and cedar, we couldn't help but think how interesting it would be to taste side-by-side with a Burgundy Regional Pinot Noir. It may be difficult to distinguish the difference at this quality level if blind-tasted. We know what we're doing tonight!
