Winery #72: Staatsweingut Freiburg (Baden, Germany)

Our second stop in a day-trip to Baden, Germany was to Staatsweingut Freiburg, a winery dating back to 1842. The estate is perfectly situated atop a hill overlooking the surrounding vineyards, a wonderful setting for a relaxing afternoon. The daily wine experience at Staatsweingut Freiburg is different than most of the other experiences in the blog.

The winery has a tasting room in the main building where visitors can purchase wines or have a quick tasting of four wines for which the fee is eliminated with a 20 euro purchase. Visitors then have the option of purchasing wine by the glass or bottle to enjoy on the estate's patio overlooking the vineyards.

The patio is equipped with several umbrellas to keep patrons cool while enjoying the gorgeous scenery. This experience is perfect for those who are looking for a casual experience at a winery without the formalities of a wine tasting and needing to adhere to a strict time schedule. The winery does offer traditional tasting experiences on Thursdays and Fridays at 3:00pm and 3:30pm, respectfully, as well as an array of other tour experiences for larger groups. Unfortunately, we were visiting the estate on a Monday, so we just experienced the short wine tasting in the tasting room.

From the lineup, we found the 2018 Doktorgarten Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs our favorite. The Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir in Germany) showed great complexity across the dark cherry, red currant, and ripe strawberry fruit aromas, as well as evidence of oak ageing with aromas and flavors of vanilla, cloves, and spices. The wine demonstrated structural balance among the tannins, acidity, and alcohol levels, with its pronounced finish lingering on the palate. This Pinot Noir has a fantastic price-to-quality ratio, especially after living in Burgundy for the last nine months! You can find the YouTube video of this experience here.
