Gracing the eastern shore of the Mosel River, Weingut Dr. Loosen is a significant player in bringing wines from Germany's Mosel wine-producing region to the international consumer. The Loosen family has owned the estate for the last 200 years and exports its wines to 80 countries worldwide. With over 80 hectares (nearly 200 acres) of vineyards in the region, Weingut Dr. Loosen helps meet the global demand for high-quality German Riesling.
During our wine-tasting experience at the wine bar in the tasting room, our host presented 12 wines originating from the eight prestigious vineyards held by the winery. Additionally, we had the opportunity to sample two of Weingut Loosen’s famous sweet wines: Beerenauslese and Eiswein. Our favorite wine from the lineup was the 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Grosse Gewachs (“GG”) Alte Reben. These Riesling vines located on the steep eastern-facing slopes of the Mosel River banks are up to 120 years old, hence "Alte Reben" designating old vines. One of the interesting aspects of the Würzgarten Vineyard in the municipality of Ürzig is the red volcanic and slate soil. The high concentrations of iron oxide in the soil make it uniquely red.
